Truck driver escapes injuries in Westport crash

A box truck careened off Interstate 95 in Westport and crashed into trees alongside the highway late Friday, but the driver escaped with only minor injuries.

The crash, which involved only the box truck, took place shortly after 11 p.m. Friday between southbound Exits 18 and 17, according to Westport firefighters.

The truck's cab was heavily damaged in the accident, which also bent the highway guardrail.

The driver, however, was able to get out of the cab before emergency crews arrived on the scene. He was evaluated by Westport EMS, but declined to be taken to the hospital.

The truck's 50-gallon diesel fuel tank was dislodged in the crash, firefighters said, and began leaking. The state Department of Environmental Protection was alerted to arrange clean up of the spill.

The damaged truck had to be hauled from the scene by two heavy-duty wreckers.
