The downtown property that formerly housed the Westport Weston Family Y has begun its transformation into Bedford Square, a multi-use complex housing retail outlets, residential units, offices and restaurants.

The historic Kemper-Gunn house on Church Lane is prepped for its move, beginning early next Tuesday, to make way for part of the development. At Kemper-Gunn's new site in the Baldwin parking lot on Elm Street, once positioned on its new foundation, the circa-1880s building will be renovated for commercial use.

Meanwhile, work crews Wednesday were busy cutting down trees along the front of the classic Bedford Mansion that once formed the core of the original YMCA, as well as a one-time firehouse.

Both structures will be renovated and re-purposed into the new Bedford Square.
