Tournaments start late because of power outages
The start of the FCIAC field hockey and girls volleyball tournaments have been delayed because of the power outages caused by Saturday's winter storm.
Field hockey, which was originally scheduled to start Saturday and was then moved to Sunday before a postponement moved it to Monday, only to be postponed again, will finally begin Wednesday.
Fourth-seeded Staples will face fifth-seeded Stamford Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Brien McMahon in the quarterfinals and a win will place it in the semifinals Thursday at New Canaan. If the Lady Wreckers win, they will face the winner of top-seeded Darien against eighth-seeded Westhill in the semis. The field hockey championships, which was originally scheduled for Thursday, is now slated for 10 a.m. Saturday morning at McMahon.
The third-seeded Staples girls volleyball team was slated to host sixth-seeded Stamford Tuesday but the match was postponed to Thursday at 4 p.m. If the Lady Wreckers win, they will face the winner of second-seeded Ridgefield and seventh-seeded Danbury Friday at Fairfield Ludlowe. The volleyball championship was originally scheduled for Saturday at Ludlowe and this remains unchanged.
Meanwhile, the FCIAC girls swimming schedule will now have trials Thursday at Greenwich and finals Saturday at Greenwich. The diving championships are at Westhill Saturday.

Originally, the fourth-seeded Staples boys soccer team was supposed to face eighth-seeded New Canaan in the FCIAC semifinals Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Ludlowe and it looked like the FCIAC boys soccer tournament would remain unscathed. The game was moved to Wednesday and the championship game, which was originally scheduled for Thursday will now take place on Friday.
In the SWC, the girls volleyball tournament, which was slated to start Tuesday, will now begin Thursday. Fifth-seeded Weston will open the tournament at fourth-seeded Bunnell in the SWC quarterfinals. The SWC semifinals are Friday and championship game is Saturday.
