Every dog has its day. And, in Westport, that day is Saturday.

Saturday will be "Top Dog Day" in town, a celebration of local canines by the group, Westport Animal Shelter Advocates, a non-profit dedicated to the care and shelter of abandoned or lost animals in Fairfield County.

The event is set for Compo Beach from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; rain date is Sunday.

Dogs will compete in the following categories: Top Aged to Perfection (10 years old and over), Top Tail Wagger, Top Face Only a Mother Could Love, Top Dog-Owner Look Alike, Top Kisser and Top K-9 Trick.

Judges will include actor James Naughton and Dr. Bob and Susan Goldstein of the Westport-based pet supply store, Earth Animal.

There also will be a disc jockey, food by Joey's By the Sea, a pet adoption area and a silent auction that will include items such as signed memorabilia from the NFL, MLB, NBA and the NHL, Cowboys-Giants tickets, jewelry and donations from local merchants.

A WASA volunteer will be on hand to provide information and answer questions about a book to be published, "Rescue Dogs of Westport."
