Three Post Road East properties have been identified as potential sites of a new main Westport Post Office.

First Selectman Gordon Joseloff said Wednesday that one of the contenders is a smaller space in the building that now houses the Post Office at 154 Post Road East. Under that scenario, the U.S. Postal Service would become a tenant of a developer offering to purchase the 74-year-old structure, he said.

Other possible sites listed in a letter from William S. Moncrief, real estate specialist for the Postal Service, are:

• 275 Post Road East, the end unit in the Playhouse Square Shopping Center.

• 645 Post Road East, in the shopping center anchored by Fresh Market.

The letter lists nine properties it said were offered -- and rejected. Five were ruled out because of loading access issues; three were discounted because of problems with the location, and one because the space is two stories.

"We are heartened to hear that the Postal Service is seriously considering staying where it is, albeit in smaller space," Joseloff said. "That would be the ideal solution, especially if the rest of the building could enhance downtown by housing an arts entity, coffee shop, or other use that would generate public interest."

The Postal Service letter, dated May 26, added: "In compliance with postal regulations, any member of the community or your office may offer written comments on any of these properties within the next 30 days." The letters should be sent to Vice President, Facilities, U.S. Postal Service, 6 Griffin Road , North, Windsor, CT 06006-0300, Moncrief said.
