Things to do in Westport this weekend
It's a weekend for ghouls and goblins, but that doesn't mean you should be afraid to venture out in Westport. Here's a few suggestions to help you out:
Fall in love Friday with "Shakespeare in Love." The Academy Award-winning film will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Ave. David Kennedy, associate art director at the Westport Country Playhouse, will provide an introduction and context to themes in the movie. Admission is $10. Visit http://westportartscenter.org for more information.
It won't get you on television, but grandma's old rocking chair could prove to be a gold mine. Take treasured antiques to the Westport Woman's Club's Appraisal Fair on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., 44 Imperial Ave. The appraisal fee is $5 per item and profits will support community service projects. For more information, call 203-227-4240 or visit www.westportwomansclub.org.
Some like it hot and the place for them is "Chilifest," served up from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Church, 10 Lyons Plains Road. Ten area restaurants will be participating and admission -- $6 adults, $5 seniors and $2 ages 5-17 -- gets you a spoon, pencil and ballot to vote for your favorite. More information can be found at www.uuwestport.org or by calling 203-227-7205.
Whether you prefer apple or pumpkin, the Westport Public Library, 20 Jesup Road, will be the place for pie lovers Saturday for "Going Pie Crazy," from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. The event features two authors, a cooking demonstration and door prizes. Admission is free, but registration is required. Visit www.westportlibrary.org or call 203-291-4800.
Chill out on Sunday with a treat from Frosty Bear Ice Cream, 161 Cross Highway. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., 50 percent of all after-tax profits will benefit Westport's Wakeman Town Farm. Call 203-2446 for more information.
