No need to sit at home all weekend, twiddling your thumbs until Monday arrives, and with it, the annual Westport Memorial Day observances. Here are suggestions to keep you in a celebratory spirit:
Take in the opening reception for "The Sound & The Saugatuck" at 5 p.m. Friday at the Westport Historical Society, 25 Avery Place. The exhibit, through Sept. 1, looks at how Westport's locale at the juncture of Long Island Sound and the Saugatuck River shaped its history. Call 203-222-1424 or visit westporthistory.org for more information.
Get yourself in shape for the Monday's big parade at the Memorial Day Weekend Yoga Workshop Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Kaia Yoga, 1200 Post Road East. The cost is $25 in advance and $35 on the day of the session. Visit kaiayoga.com or call 203-532-0660.
On Saturday, take in the Staples Players production of "Almost Maine," in the school's black box theater, 70 North Ave. There will be a matinee at 4 p.m and an evening show at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15; $10 for students. Buy online at staplesplayers.com or at the door 30 minutes prior to curtain. Call 203-341-1310 for more information.
Stroll the streets Sunday and take in the display and sale of 79 artists' work throughout the downtown as part of the Westport Downtown Merchants Association's ongoing "Art About Town" public arts celebration. For more information visit www.artabouttownwestport.com.
Everybody loves a parade, so grab a spot Monday for the town's Memorial Day parade. The parade steps off at 9 a.m. from Saugatuck Elementary School on Riverside Avenue, goes up Riverside Avenue to the Post Road and then to Town Hall on Myrtle Avenue. A ceremony follows on Veterans Green across from Town Hall.
