They haven't sold Cadillacs at 561 Post Road East in three years.

But the new retailer that opens its doors on the site Friday may well be the Cadillac of garden and home-decor stores.

Terrain -- an upscale garden super store that also carries an array interior decor -- will open in a renovated building that housed the Curran Cadillac dealership for more than 40 years.

Terrain officials said the 16,000-square-foot store would cater to gardeners who "care as much about design and provenance in their outdoor living as they do their private indoor spaces."

The Westport outlet is the company's second after its flagship store in Glen Mills, Pa., and will employ about 70 people, the company said.

"The new store in Westport will be an example of what's so special about Terrain," the retailer's president Wendy McDevitt, said in a news release. "This former industrial site is being transformed into a celebration of nature, home and the expressive potential of the garden lifestyle."

Terrain is a division of Urban Outfitters Inc., the Philadelphia-based specialty retailer that owns four other chains -- Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, BHLDN bridal shops and Free People women's apparel.

The parent company reported sales of $2.5 billion in the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, although it did not break out sales for Terrain, its smallest unit.

The Westport store features an outdoor nursery, an antique greenhouse, a range of garden tools and accessories, blooming plants and terraniums, planters, pots and containers, and outdoor furniture.

The company said landscape designers are available to answer questions, and the store plans a series of indoor workshops from Gardening 101, summer canning and planting outdoor centerpieces.

For inside the home, the store stocks vintage and hand-crafted furniture, tabletop and serving pieces and home accents such as mirrors, lamps, lanterns and throws, Terrain said.

It also offers jewelry, edibles from local producers and a line of beauty products.

Lunch and dinner will be served in a cafe that features a "living wall" of more than 100 orchids and slow-drip fountain, the company said.

The parent company already has two stores in Westport -- Anthropologie at 1365 Post Road and Urban Outfitters at 101-107 Post Road East downtown.
