Seven out of eight local teams in soccer, field hockey and volleyball qualified for the state tournament, which begins Thursday.

The 20th-seeded Staples girls soccer team opens its Class LL tournament run at 13th-seeded New Milford. New Milford recently won the SWC championship. Speaking of New Milford, 28th-seeded Weston, who lost 1-0 to the SWC champs during the regular season, will begin its tournament run Thursday at 4 p.m. at fifth-seeded Lewis Mills.

Also on Thursday, the 21st-seeded Weston girls volleyball team opens its Class M playoff run at 12th-seeded Ledyard at 4:30 p.m.

In boys soccer, 11th-seeded Staples begins its Class LL tournament run at home against 22nd Manchester. Familiarity is a theme for 19th-seeded Weston, who kicks off its Class M tournament at 14th-seeded Bethel. During the regular season, the Trojans played Bethel to a 2-2 tie at home Sept. 24.

On Saturday, the recently-crowned FCIAC field hockey champion Lady Wreckers start their Class L tournament. Similar to Weston boys soccer, ninth-seeded Staples is familiar with its opponent. During the regular season, Staples defeated Hall 2-1 at home Sept. 17. The rematch takes place at eighth-seeded Hall at 9 a.m. Sixth-seeded Staples girls volleyball got a first round bye and hosts the winner of 11th-seeded New Canaan and 22nd-seeded Trumbull Saturday at 7 p.m. in the secod round of the Class LL tournament. Just like their field hockey compatriots and Weston boys soccer, the Lady Wrecker spikers are familiar with both potential opponents. Staples defeated Trumbull 3-1 at home Oct. 11 and won 3-1 at New Canaan Oct. 26.
