As the early-season results have indicated, the Greenwich girls swimming team has picked up right where it left off last season — a year that concluded with the Class LL title in its possession and a second-placing showing at the State Open Championships.

After swimming past formidable Glastonbury on Saturday, the Cardinals returned to conference action Thursday and proceeded to produce typical results.

Showcasing its superior depth, Greenwich improved to 4-0 on the season, defeating visiting Staples, 106-78, in an FCIAC meet.

“We are training really hard, so rising to swim hard today was tough,” GHS coach Lorrie Hokayem said. “But our girls did a nice job of finishing races. Staples is a good team, so it was nice to have some good races for our kids.”

Indeed, Greenwich has increased the intensity of its workouts, holding optional practices in the morning, before holding its regular afternoon practice sessions.

“We have been training a lot and it has been paying off,” Cardinals sophomore Sophia Jahan said. “We are definitely trying to swim faster at this point of the season and score more points.”

Jahan helped spark the Cardinals, winning the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1 minute, 59.44 seconds. Teammate Lilly Clisham, a sophomore, was the runner-up (2:00.41).

“In the 200 freestyle I made a point of going out really fast, then I tried to pace myself,” Jahan said. “I had enough energy to come back at the end.”

Jahan also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle (56.47) — an event won by Cardinals freshman Samantha Scott (54.77). Scott also had a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:01.13). Ainsleigh Winget, a sophomore, placed second in the 100 backstroke in (1:04.23).

“I swam an event really close to the backstroke, so I was really tired like a bunch of us were,” Scott said. “But we all stood strong and were able to pull it off. A lot of us are used to it, because we have been working hard during morning practices.”

The meet began with the Greenwich foursome of Scott, Brooke Collins, Kelly Montesi and Taylor Schinto winning the 200 medley relay in 1:53.95. Staples took second in 1:54.06. The Wreckers saw senior Mia Bullock touch the wall first in the 200 individual medley (2:12.77) and 100 butterfly (58.70). Collins was second in the 200 IM, while Montesi was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly (1:00.15).

“We were hoping to have a good meet with them and we did,” Staples coach Mike Laux said. “We’ve had good meets with Greenwich the past few years and across the board, we received great performances. Greenwich is well-coached, they work hard and they had a super meet today.”

Kenzie Healy of Staples was the 50 freestyle winner, touching the wall in 25.73. Winget placed second (25.74), followed by Schinto (26.15). Greenwich also received winning efforts from freshman Maddie Muldoon (diving, 231.25) Collins (senior tri-captain, 100 breaststroke, 1:11.84) and freshman Emily Warner (500 freestyle, 5:26.13). Willow Woods from Staples was second in the 100 breaststroke, while senior Aileen Coyne took second for the Wreckers in the 500 freestyle.

“To swim the 500 you have to be mentally positive, because there are a lot of laps to swim and you get numb after a while,” Warner said. “Every lap, you just have to keep on swimming, hoping you will win. I can pace it pretty well.”

Warner, Montesi, Schinto and Jahan touched out the competition in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.92) and Jahan, Clisham, Winget and Scott had the best time in the 400 freestyle relay (3:48.03).

“We have a young team, which is great for the future, but we also have some awesome seniors and upperclassmen, who are providing great leadership,” Hokayem said.; 203-625-4423
