WESTPORT — After dropping on their second game of the season, Staples girls soccer took out its frustrations on a struggling Westhill squad on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-2 win.
“We said if they score,” Staples coach Barry Beattie said. “Regardless we have to have the attitude that we’re going to score again.”
The Wreckers approach to the game can after losing a 4-0 lead against the Vikings last season. Westhill fought all the way back before ending the game in a 4-4 tie.
With the memory of last year in the back of their minds, the Wreckers came out firing in the first half with goals from Katie Ialeggio, Julia Lombardo, and Reese Sutter.
Sutter starred for Staples as she netted two goals to go along with a pair of assists. She said keeping her teammates involved is a better feeling for her than scoring herself.
“For me I just want to help get the assist or make the plays,” Sutter said. “It’s really nice to contribute two goals and get that on the scoreboard.”
Westhill fought hard against the stronger Wreckers, but they were overmatched in several aspects - including being outshot 32-7.
A rough outing against a quality opponent, Westhill coach Dave Flowers said.
“We’ve got players that are playing their sixth or seventh game at this level,” he said. “I actually think we’re doing fairly well. One game doesn’t make a season just put it down to a bad day.”
SITTING AT THE TOP
With the bounce back win, Staples’ 7-2 record puts them in the driver’s seat in the FCIAC West. The Wreckers are four points up on second-place Trumbull.
BOUNCING BACK BIG
The Wreckers have responded with huge offensive performances in games this season following a loss. Staples has outscored opponents 13-2 coming off a loss. While having only two losses on the season, the Wreckers have one of the best records in the conference.
“We were pretty devastated after McMahon). Coming into that we were pretty confident. But after two days of talking we were able to come together and figure out what we needed to work on.” Staples Sophomore Reese Sutter.
