Staples girls hockey continues to grow as a program
The Staples girls hockey team begins the season with many new and returning players. As a second-year varsity program, the Lady Wreckers have a lot of work to do to catch up to the other teams.
"Last year was our first year of varsity -- we played teams that have been together for years with players who have been playing since they were young," said Staples coach David Rollison.
Gone from last year's team are captains Casey Richards, Nikki D'Alessio and Rebecca Tash. Other seniors who graduated include Sara Casey, Sarah Hyun, Ali Chunovic, Sea Sloat, Lauren Casey and Rachael Paz. Although these players will not be returning, the current team has much hope for the upcoming season.
Three key newcomers, juniors Kate Shanahan and Jenn Hoets, along with sophomore Jessie Lepisto, join Staples and are expected to bolsterthe team. "These are three experienced players who bring a lot to the team in playing ability and leadership," said Rollison.
Senior captains Abby Beckoff and Jenny Kopak have set high standards for the team in hope of beating many teams that they were not as prepared to do last season. Rollison said, "We want to win a few games and increase our level of competitiveness while also always having fun. The enjoyment of the sport is key to us."
