The Stamford comedy duo known as “The Chris & Paul Show” will be appearing on “Bring the Funny,” a new comedy competition show on NBC that premieres Tuesday, July 9, at 10 p.m., following “America’s Got Talent.”

Chris O’Neill and Paul Valenti hail from Connecticut, where they met as comedy newbies. O’Neill attended Stamford High and Valenti went to Greenwich High. Both live in Stamford.

The duo joined forces in 1999 as “The Chris & Paul Show” and eventually took their act in 2003 to New York City, where they shared a tiny 16’ x 8’ studio apartment, a bunk bed and an appreciation for comedy greats of the past, they say on their website.

Since then, they’ve honed their signature style into a stylized modern-day vaudeville act of mundane sets ups spinning out of control toward unexpected endings that keep the audience guessing. Though the pair primarily headlines in and around New York City, they say they have been fortunate to perform in several domestic and international festivals. It was at a stop at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2011 where they met the “Book of Mormon” casting director, eventually leading to O’Neill making a boisterous Broadway debut as clownish missionary Elder Cunningham in the Tony-winning hit musical.

Most recently, the guys say they are excited to appear on season one of NBC’s “Bring the Funny.”

NBC says on its website the show will feature “the world’s best comedic acts and, for the first time on television, embrace every style of comedy performance in one competition.”

The 10-episode series will bring together some of the most prolific comedians in the industry to serve as judges — “Saturday Night Live’s” longest-running cast member Kenan Thompson, cultural tastemaker Chrissy Teigen and comedy icon Jeff Foxworthy. Comedian Amanda Seales will serve as host for the competition.
