A walking tour and wine tasting will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, with Allen Raymond, the town's historian, as the guide. During the hour-long walk, participants will be shown the origins of many historic buildings in Saugatuck, once the town's center of commerce and development, and given insight into the daily lives of residents from the early 1800s to present day. Westport resident Loretta Santella Hallock will share stories about growing up in one of the original Old Saugatuck Italian families.
After the walking tour, guests will be offered complimentary cocktails at River House Tavern on Riverside Avenue. A 15 percent discount will be given to those who buy dinner.
The following morning, an hour-long kayaking history tour of the Saugatuck River will depart from DownUnder Kayaking, 575 Riverside Ave., at 10 a.m. Susan Gold, the Westport Historical Society's executive director and a certified yoga teacher, will conduct yoga warm-up stretches before the tour from 9:30 to 10 a.m.
Following the brief exercises, Raymond will give a brief history of the river before participants paddle down it to explore its shoreline and estuaries and watch for birds such as osprey, peregrine falcons, egrets and blue herons. A resident environmental expert will share knowledge of the river.
Tickets, which cost $20 for the walking tour and $40 for the kayaking tour, which includes single or kayak or paddle board rental, must be bought in advance by calling 203- 222-7070 or visiting www.westportartscenter.org.
Proceeds from the tours will go to support the programs of both the Westport Arts Center and The Westport Historical Society.
