Slippery road conditions caused by Monday morning's icy rain and winds contributed to three accidents along a northbound stretch of the Merritt Parkway in Westport, between Exits 40 and 42.

The separate crashes, which injured several people, all took place about 7:30 a.m. as the early blast of winter weather caused the highway surface to glaze over.

Firefighters and EMS crews from both Westport and Norwalk were dispatched to the scene, and three people were taken to Norwalk Hospital for further treatment of their injuries.

The crashes also tied up commuter traffic on the parkway as the emergency operations were under way.

The accidents are being investigated by State Police.
