Shelter resident faces charges after pepper-spraying man
WESTPORT — A 19-year-old man was arrested after an altercation with another resident at Gillespie Center on the evening of Sept. 21.
Shaquielle Smith allegedly pepper-sprayed the man during an argument.
The second resident told police Smith was upset because he believed someone staying at the shelter had stolen money from him.
Police did not find evidence of a theft. Westport EMS treated the victim, whose face and eyes were irritated.
Smith admitted to pepper-spraying the bed and clothes of another resident, police said.
Smith was charged with third-degree criminal mischief and breach of the peace.
He was also charged with interfering with an officer after becoming noncompliant and combative during his arrest, according to police. Smith’s bail was set at $5,000; he was scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
