Sharlene Surprise Hays, a Stamford resident who previously lived in Westport, died Feb. 13.

Born and raised in Westport, she was a graduate of Staples High School in 1976. She went on to graduate from Jacksonville University. After returning to Westport, she took a job at Boatworks Yacht Sales in Rowayton, where she worked 24 years, retiring last November.

She enjoyed the beach, boating and dogs, especially Golden Retrievers.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Hays of Stamford; her mother, Anne Surprise of Cape Cod, Mass.; a brother, Scott and his wife Deborah of Texas, and loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Capt. Bill Surprise, and a brother, Steve Surprise.

A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m., in the VFW post on Riverside Avenue, Westport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to either St. Jude's Children's Hospital (donors@stjude.org) or Golden Retriever Rescue (golden-rescue.org).
