The Science Olympiad team from Bedford Middle School traveled to the University of Nebraska last month for a national competition against 120 other middle and high school teams in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The Bedford team, after competing in 23 events spanning topics from forensics to entomology to robotics, was presented with the Lockheed Martin Spirit Award. The award includes $2,000 for the school.

The Lockheed Martin Spirit Award is bestowed on one middle and high school team at the competition each year, and recognizes teams “whose members have a good attitude, exemplify teamwork, have respect for the rules and their fellow competitors, and who exhibit sportsmanlike conduct,” according to a statement from the Science Olympiad.

Art Ellis and Rebecca Kaplan, the BMS STEM teachers, are the team’s coaches.
