WESTPORT—Saugatuck Rowing Club’s juniors three-peated as victors in the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic regatta, held last weekend in San Diego, bringing home their third gold in a row in the women’s high school varsity 8+ event and also winning the women’s high school JV 8+ event.

The varsity girls gold followed the crew’s win at the Head of the Charles Regatta in the fall. The SRC boys also fielded men’s high school varsity 8+ and men’s high school lightweight 8+ boats, which both delivered strong performances, with the lightweight 8+ taking second in the petite final. With top high school teams from across the country competing in the regatta, qualifying heats can include more than 20 crews.

“It’s always valuable to see how we measure up against top teams from the West Coast and beyond early in the season,” said Sharon Kriz, director of rowing and junior boys head coach of Saugatuck Rowing Club in a press release. “It was great to see our crews rowing hard and putting their winter indoor training to the test.”

“Our girls’ double victories showed that Saugatuck continues to be a top contender, and winning the JV race was testament to the team’s depth,” said Gordon Getsinger, SRC head junior girls coach. “We’re looking forward to more strong performances during the spring season.”
