Robert T. Henkel, 81, of Stratford and formerly of Westport, died Sept. 18.

Born in 1930 in Columbus, Ohio, he attended Ohio State University, and then served the U.S. Army during the Korean War for the Hometown News Service based in Kansas City. After the war, he finished his studies at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He wrote briefly for the Kansas City Star and INS before joining the public relations team at Lazarus Department Store in Columbus, where he met and married Margaret (Peggy) Clark Henkel.

In 1959, he joined the public relations firm of Carl Byoir & Associates, where he worked for the rest of his career, becoming executive vice president and head of the firm's international division

Survivors, in addition to his wife of 54 years, include his daughter Elizabeth; a son-in-law, and three grandchildren.

A service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, in Christ & Holy Trinity Church.
