Last Saturday the Westport Parks and Recreation Department opened the 54th Annual Road Runners Program with a 2.2 mile run starting at Staples High School. Jon Foster of Westport, an assistant Staples Track and Field coach, won his first Road Runners race as he led 214 runners over the old Staples cross country course with the time of 11:23.
Foster’s time, however, was well off the course record of 10:25 set by Roy Mascolino of Westport in 1986. The first woman to finish was Blythe Lewis, also of Westport, in 19th place overall with the time of 13:47. Lewis’s time was also short of the women’s course record of 11:49 set by Kerri Lyons of Wilton in 2014.
Second and third places in the men’s division in Saturday’s race were awarded to Luke McCambley, of Westport, and James Osborn, of Ridgefield, with respective times of 11:31 and 11:46. Second and third places in the women’s division were awarded to Sarah Radziewicz of Fairfield in 26th overall and Eliza Tabacchi of Weston in 29th with the respective times of 14:08 and 14:21. Other Westport-Weston residents who finished in the top ten were Dan Landy, fourth in 11:47, and David Allen, 10th in 12:59.
The next scheduled Road Runners race will be held on Saturday, July 9 with a 3.1 mile run starting at Longshore Club Park.
All interested persons are invited to participate in this popular summer program. Applications for and information about the Road Runners Program are available at the Recreation Offices at Longshore Club Park, at the start of each Saturday’s race, or at the Program’s website located at westportroadrunners.org. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Pavilion located next to the tennis courts. The fee for the program is $30 for Westport residents and $60 for non-residents. In addition, participants have the option of paying a weekly fee of $5 (resident) or $10 (non-resident) per race fee instead of the program fee.
