Ridgefield man faces drug charges

Police said store employees believed that William Mercede, 45, of North Salem Road, was under the influence and were trying to keep him from driving away just before 5:20 p.m..

Mercede was unable to find his keys, and while looking for them, opened the console in his Cadillac Escalade, revealing a bag of cocaine. A further search uncovered prescription painkiller tablets, police said.

Mercede was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to keep prescription drugs in the original container.
