A group of local gardeners is cultivating support for their project.

The public is invited to the check out the Westport Community Gardens on Saturday for what the gardeners are calling an "open garden" program and ribbon-cutting. The event at the gardens, 13 Hyde Lane, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. (Rain date is Sunday, from 2 to 5 p.m.)

Visitors are welcome to tour the plots planted by the community gardeners, including some of the unique "growing structures" among the gardens. The gardeners will also be available to discuss different strategies on pest control, raised garden beds and techniques for organic gardening.

The gardeners are raising a variety of vegetables, fruits and flowers, and the "Grow a Row for the Hungry" plots on the site produce vegetables that are donated to the Gillespie Center homeless shelter.
