Police disarm ‘despondent’ man with gun on Cross Highway

WESTPORT — An armed man described as “despondent” caused police to shut down streets around Cross Highway while the situation was defused Monday afternoon.
The man, who was not identified by police, was threatening to “harm himself” with a firearm in the area of Christies Service Station, 161 Cross Highway, about 4:30 p.m. Monday, police said.
The man was unharmed when officers arrived on the scene, and the weapon was taken away without incident, according to the report, and there was no threat to the public. The firearm was registered to the man, police said
He was taken for evaluation to Norwalk Hospital.
