Downunder Kayaks, SUPs and Surf Shop is sponsoring a New Year's Day "Polar Paddle" to benefit Al's Angels, the Westport-based organization that aids families challenged by children's illnesses and other hardships.
The event is planned from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the Saugatuck River, with kayaks and paddle boards embarking from Downunder's 575 Riverside Ave. shop. Participants may use their own equipment or rent it from Downunder, the shop said in a news release.
Downunder recommends a $25 donation to participate, $50 if the shop's equipment is used. All Proceeds, including rental fees, will be donated to Al's Angels, the shop said.
The nonprofit Al's Angel's mission, according to its website, is to provide "moments of joy" to children with cancer and other serious illnesses and to families challenged by domestic violence or financial hardships.
Downunder said full cold-water gear was required for the event.
