Paul Spielman of Selma, Oreg., formerly of New Canaan, died Sept. 28, 2009, at the age of 39, as a result of a diabetic coma.
He was the son of Jeanne Little Fox of Longboat Key, Fla., and Freeport, Maine, and the late Joseph Spielman. After Spielman -- who was described by his mother as a "free spirit" -- graduated from New Canaan High School in 1987, he headed west to attend The University of Northern Colorado and the California Culinary Institute in San Francisco. A gourmet cook, he lived most of his life in Selma, Oreg., where he was very involved in the local community.
In addition to his mother, Spielamn is survived by his son, Joseph; daughter, Rosemary; his brothers, Bill Hopkins of North Yarmouth, Maine, and Michael Spielman of Greenwich; his sister, Bonnie Spielman Sinclair of Westport; his uncles, Philip Spielman and George Little; and 11 nieces and nephews.
