Boaters can safely dispose of outdated marine flares on Saturday, June 29, during a collection at the E.R. Straight Marina.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., old flares may be dropped off at the marina dock to members of the Saugatuck River Chapter of the U.S. Power Squadrons. Flares more than 3 years old do not satisfy Coast Guard safety limits, but remain volatile.

The Power Squadron will either properly dispose of the old flares or expend them in training drills.

The squadron also is offering free safety inspections of recreational boats from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The group's examiners will conduct the voluntary inspections and award safety decals to vessels that pass.
