Newman's Own Foundation has awarded a two-year, $50,000 grant to the Westport Weston Family Y's Special Cares program at Camp Mahackeno, the Y has annojunced.

The grant made it possible for children with special needs to participate in the 2011 summer season and underwrites the program for 2012.

"Because the cost for providing services to children with special needs is quite high, we are grateful for this grant from the Newman's Own Foundation," David Cohen, the Y's vice president of operations. "It's a wonderful experience for these children, and having them involved in camp activities is meaningful for all our campers."

The Y said providing activities for special-needs children is challending, so the program has a camper-to-counselor ratio of 2-to-1.

"The Westport Weston Family Y is committed to the inclusion of all children," says Lisa Walker, managing director of Newman's Own Foundation. "We are proud to extend our support for the Special Cares program at Camp Mahackeno into 2012."

Situated on 32 acres of woodlands, meadows and playing fields along the Saugatuck River in Westport, the Family Y's Camp Mahackeno has been provided summer recreation for children since the 1930s.

Based in Westport, Newman's Own Foundation gives out all net royalties and profits from the sale of Newman's Own products into charitable donations.More information about Newman's Own Foundation can be found at newmansownfoundation.org.
