A 34-year-old New York City man was charged with drug possession early Friday after he was stopped for assaulting a man on a downtown city street.

Police said they saw Rafael Donovan Perez allegedly punch another man in the head at 1 a.m. at the corner of White and Ives streets. When they searched Perez, police allegedly found 17 glassine plastic bags of cocaine in his possession.


Perez was charged with third-degree assault, possession of a narcotic substance and possession of a narcotic substance with intent to sell.
