Two local organizations are offering a chance to start 2013 in bracing style with "plunges" in Long Island Sound to raise money for nonprofits on New Year's Day.

Participants should arrive at 9:30 a.m. to be ready to plunge at 10 a.m. A 3-mile run will follow the plunge for those who wish to warm themselves up, according to Mossman's website.

Temple Israel will sponsor its sixth annual "Freezin' for a Reason Polar Plunge" to benefit United Cerebral Palsy of New York City at 11 a.m., also at the beach.

Cost for the Mossman event is a donation of $45, $75 or $125 per person. Participants may pre-register at under "Events" or sign up at the beach before the plunge.
