Mustangs crush Red Devils

DANBURY - Courtney McMahon scored three goals to lead the Immaculate High girls soccer team to an 8-1 South-West Conference victory over an inexperienced Stratford team Thursday afternoon.

"I think we're definitely starting to play better," said McMahon. "We've had some tough losses, but with one more win we'll make the playoffs."

McMahon's first goal came five minutes into the game, with a shot in the far corner from the 20-yard line.

Nicole Sieber added the second goal two minutes later from a pass by Christina Smith .

The Mustangs' Nicole Baker headed the ball in the center of the box, where McMahon was waiting for her second goal of the night.

McMahon's final goal came 22 minutes into the half from a pass by Kathryn Stascavage.

The half ended with the Mustangs up 6-0 after goals by Sieber and Sarah Duffy . Immaculate's starters only played in the first half.

The Mustangs outshot Stratford 14-0. Stratford's goalkeeper Allie Herman made 10 saves in the half.

Stratford's roster is made up of freshmen and sophomores.

"In the second half, they were a lot more determined," said Stratford coach Larry Ciccarelli . "If they can do that the whole 80 minutes, they could be highly competitive."

Stratford improved in the second half and limited the Mustangs to eight shots.

"I don't think we're a very cocky team," McMahon said. "We've always been seen as the underdogs. We don't have a big bench compared to the Masuks and Newtowns. I think we still see ourselves as underdogs."
