A man has been charged with trying to steal money for a gas station's ATM two times over the course of two months.
Ernesto Alicea, 49, of Bridgeport was taken into custody Wednesday by Stratford police on a Westport police warrant calling for his arrest for two attempted thefts from the ATM machine at Mobil Self-Serve, 1060 Post Road East.
In each incident -- one in September, the other in October -- the would-be thief tried to pry open the ATM to access the contents, police said. In October, officers interrupted the attempted theft, but Alicea was able to elude officers during a subsequent pursuit, according to the report.
The continuing investigation into the incidents, police said, identified Alicea as the suspect and the warrant was issued for his arrest.
He was charged with third-degree criminal attempt at larceny, third-degree conspiracy at larceny, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree conspiracy at criminal mischief and interfering with an officer.
Bond was set at $15,000 and he was scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 12 at Norwalk Superior Court.
