Joseph Dennis, 50, of Bridgeport, was arrested and charged with sixth-degree larceny Saturday night after police said he stole groceries and bottled water from Stop & Shop on Post Road East.

According to police, store employees saw Dennis take grocery bags and leave the store without paying. When a store employee ran after him, Dennis reportedly dropped the bags in front of Jordan's Pizzeria and Restaurant, 1759 Post Road East.

The items included a six pack of Budweiser, a pack of onion rings, a bottle of Gatorade, two Nestle Butterfingers, and two packs of popcorn shrimp worth $31.86.

After Dennis was apprehended, police said they checked surveillance video from the store and observed Dennis leaving earlier with a "cart full of large Nestle Purewater plastic bottles without paying." Each bottle has a $6 deposit for return. Dennis had reportedly emptied the $5.99 bottles and re-entered the store and claimed the $6 deposit on each emptied bottle. The water bottles and the recyclables amounted to $71.94 in stolen goods, police said.

Dennis was released on a promise to appear June 25 in Norwalk Superior Court.
