An eastern Connecticut man has been charged with the theft of gift envelopes containing cash and checks at a wedding reception at the Inn at Longshore last month.
Frank A. Burnett, 30, of Mansfield, turned himself in at police headquarters Friday after learning a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
Surveillance video showed a man posing as a wedding guest entering the Inn at Longshore at about 7 p.m. Oct. 11, stealing an ornamental bird cage holding envelopes for the newlyweds and then escaping through the lobby.
Police on Friday said they received "numerous tips" identifying Burnett after the video was posted on www.westport-news.com and broadcast on other media outlets in Connecticut and New York. Detectives subsequently obtained an arrest warrant.
The amount stolen was not disclosed.
Police were called to the inn after the theft was discovered. They set up a perimeter around the inn and were assisted by a Norwalk Police K-9 unit, but the suspect had escaped.
They later found the empty birdcage.
Police said they determined Burnett had attended another wedding at the Inn at Longshore some weeks prior to the Oct. 11 theft.
Burnett was charged with fourth-degree larceny and posted $2,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear Nov. 17 at Superior Court in Norwalk Superior Court.
