The organizers of an annual townwide day of service have expanded it to nine consecutive days this fall and are seeking volunteers to work on a variety of projects in lower Fairfield County.

Make a Difference Day was founded in 1995, organizers said, and traditionally took place the fourth Saturday in October.

This year, volunteer projects will be carried out between Saturday, Oct. 20, and Sunday, Oct. 28. Many involve helping nonprofit organizations, the group said in a news release.

Among them are creating community gardens, cleaning up area playgrounds, making personal-care bags for teens and collecting new baby items for a foster-care and family-support program.

"Our philosophy emphasizes the importance of showing our children the value of volunteering one's time, including the many rewards that can come to people who get involved," organizer Barbara Pearson-Rac said in the news release.
