A Main Street convenience store was robbed early Thursday by a masked gunman who escaped with cash receipts, police said.

The robber entered the Merritt Country Store, 337 Main St., about 3:30 a.m. Thursday, pointed a black handgun at the night clerk and demanded money, according to the report. The clerk gave an undetermined amount of cash to the robber, who left the store and fled on foot heading north on Main Street.

The suspect was wearing dark clothes, a black mask and sunglasses, the clerk told police.

A K-9 from the Monroe Police Department was brought to the scene to help search for the suspect, but the trail was lost.
