Twenty-five Westport Weston Family YMCA gymnasts experienced the world stage this summer. Gymnasts ages 11-17 spent 11 days at the International Federation of Gymnastics 15th World Gymnaestrada as part of the U.S. delegation in Helsinki, Finland.

The festival is the largest gymnastic event in the world and held every four years the year before an Olympics.

This year 50 national federation delegations with 21,000 gymnasts participated. Opening and closing ceremonies were held in the Olympic Stadium.

The United States had 250 gymnasts from five gymnastic centers — including Connecticut — invited to participate in the festival.

Westport gymnasts performed a total of seven times including an outdoor stage performance at Senate Square in Helsinki and a special invitation performance at the Pan American National Evening with top exhibition teams from South American nations.

The national evening performance was five minutes long with choreographed music.

The Westport team is coached by Y Gymnastic Center Director Sally Silverstein and her daughter Lindsay Navarro.

In addition to their five minute performance, the Westport team performed a separate 10 minute performance six additional times, titled “Girl Power.”
