Letter: Library thankful for community support
To the Editor:
On Tuesday Jan. 10, the Westport Representative Town Meeting unanimously approved an allocation of $5 million in town funding to be used toward the Westport Library Transformation Project. I am writing today on behalf of the Westport Library Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and countless supporters to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire Westport community for its continued, strident support of our organization and the exciting transformation ahead.
Every day more than 1,100 people of all ages walk through our doors to read, to write, to brainstorm, to study, to meet up with friends in the café, to learn code in our MakerSpace or to attend one of our hundreds of award-winning programs. However, the Library’s existing 1986 facility no longer supports these varied programs and services. It is no longer flexible enough to support our mission to encourage lifelong learning and the lively exchange of ideas.
This week, thanks to the tireless efforts of many, and with the Town’s generous support, the vision for our next chapter can begin to come to life. The Transformation Project plan, which is available in great detail on our Transformation Project website, www.wltransformationproject.org, envisions not only a 21st century library complete with updated technology and facilities, but also a true community center that will inspire curiosity and fuel creativity for generations to come.
I look forward to continuing to work closely with the Town and the community at-large on this important, exciting project. I am deeply grateful for the support of this community and welcome your involvement as we move forward.
