Letter: Kaner's markets fed cops after 9/11
I have known Avi Kaner for 20 years. I would like to share a story with you that provides some insight to Avi's character.
In the days after the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center, I called Avi on behalf of the NYPD. We asked if his supermarkets could provide a number of meals to the thousands of emergency personnel working around the clock.
Avi not only provided some food but incredibly supplied thousands of meals. I remember meeting him at his 57th Street store to pick up the food. Avi rolled up his sleeves and helped the police officers load the vans. We then sped down the deserted FDR Drive to Police Headquarters where he helped the officers set up the stations.
We are grateful for Avi Kaner's help then and for his ongoing help to the police department. I wish Avi, and his running mate Jim Marpe, success in the campaign for Westport selectman.
