"Enter Laughing" ... and stay that way.

That's what the Westport Community Theatre promises to audiences this weekend when it kicks off its 55th anniversary season with a production of "Enter Laughing," a coming-of-age comedy that chronicles the story of writer, actor and director Carl Reiner's early days in show business.

In this dramatized accounting, Reiner's character becomes David Kolowitz, a young stage-struck, woman-obsessed teen from the Bronx with dreams of being an actor. The play follows Kolowitz from his days as a machinist to his first breaks in show business to his faux pas to family recollections.

The play was written by Joseph Stein, based on Reiner's semi-autobiographical novel. The production is directed for the Westport stage by actor/director Will Jeffries.

The community theatre's cast features Jason Carubia, Marta T. Coppola, Tim Cronin, Dana DiCerto, Andrea Garmun, Bob Gilmore, Max Solomon Helfand, Bob Lasprogato, Bobby Pavia, Wayne Riemer, Alex Weston, E. Rochelle Woodson and Jeffries. It is produced by Diana Lawrence Mashia; Cronin does double duty as the production stage manager as well as performing as Pike, the "Enter Laughing" stage manager. The lighting design is by Jeff Klein.

Tickets for "Enter Laughing" range from $14 to $20, with performances Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Groups of 10 or more get a $2 per ticket discount, and there is a special "Student Rush" discount 15 minutes prior to performances for students of all ages with a valid student identification card.
