Joanne Mary Carleton, 75, of Calabash, N.C., a former Westport resident, died July 25 in her home.

Born Aug. 12, 1935, in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Deveta Biggs Powers. She graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit and was employed eight years at General Motors. Before moving to Brunswick Plantation, she lived in Detroit, Milwaukee, Westport and Upper St. Clair, Pa.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, William "Bill" Carleton; three daughters, Karen Pocius and husband, Mark, of Westport, Andrea Gillett and her husband, Greg, of Dunwoody, Ga., and Cheryl Gibson and her husband, Andrew, of Upper St. Clair, and seven grandchildren, Robert and Michelle Pocius, Cameron, Adam and Callie Gillett and Carleton and Christian Gibson.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 29, in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 801 11th Ave. North, North Myrtle Beach, S.C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 8439, Chapel Hill, NC 27515.
