James Brooks Smith, 87, of Vero Beach, Fla., died June 25, 2010, at the Indian River Medical Center.

He was born March 2, 1923, in South Hill, Va., and moved to Vero Beach three years ago from Weston.

Smith served in the U.S. Navy. An engineer for Exxon Mobil prior to his retirement, he was a member of the Grand Harbor Country Club, The Aspetuck Valley Country Club in Weston and Christ by the Sea Methodist Church in Vero Beach, Fla.

Survivors include his sons, James W. Smith of Weston, and John B. Smith of Centennial, Colo.; a daughter, Linda S. Merrell of Lowville, N.Y.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dolores Weston Smith.

A memorial service took place June 27 at Christ By the Sea Church in Vero Beach, Fla.
