Independence Day honored with 'red, white and blue' homes
There may be nothing more uniquely American than the pride of homeownership.
Realtors would ask that you do your patriotic duty in this week leading up to the Fourth of July holiday by considering the purchase of one of these three Colonial houses which sit on red, white and blue-themed streets.
The first is a 6,100-square-foot house at 45 Red Coat Road in Westport, which is set well back from the road on a two-acre property behind rock walls and across a granite cobblestone circular driveway.
Next is a 5,800-square-foot house that is under construction at 15 White Birch Ridge in Weston, which sits on a one-acre property with room for an in-ground pool.
Last is a 5,800-square-foot house that is also under construction at 11 Blue Ribbon Drive, a cul-de-sac in Westport and will be ready for its first owners to move in five weeks from now.
The Red Coat Road house was built in 1979 and has a number of amenities including one whole wing that was added on more recently. It has a large, informal eat-in room off the kitchen that has two walls of windows and skylights. This room provides access to an octagonal sun porch and to the bluestone patio, 60-foot swimming pool, hot tub and two-acre yard with specimen plantings, among them flowering peach and plum trees and a Hawaiian pine.

The floor-to-ceiling, natural stone fireplace in the family room has a wide, arched firebox opening and this room also has burled maple built-ins and black-out shades. The master suite has his-and-hers walk-in closets separated by a three-way mirror in the shared dressing area.
There is a spacious gourmet kitchen with marble counters and sizable center island. This house also features a generator.
The current owner said this is a great house for entertaining, and it engulfs the family in privacy yet it is only five minutes from downtown Westport and less than that to the Merritt Parkway.
The house on White Birch Ridge will not be completed until late 2012, perhaps on time for the holiday season, according to the builder, MJM Construction. But this house should be considered for anyone who likes the idea of convenience. This house is only one street removed from the Westport border. The house is two miles from downtown Westport in one direction and two miles from Weston town center in the other direction. It is also close to the Merritt Parkway and only 10 to12 minutes from the Saugatuck train station.
More architectural details will be available as the house evolves, but currently some of the features include two fireplaces, one masonry fireplace on the first floor and a gas-fueled fireplace in the master bedroom suite. The house will have hardwood floors and crown molding throughout, nine-foot ceilings one the first and second floors, a wet bar and a gourmet kitchen with high-end appliances and a breakfast nook. The one-acre property has room for an in-ground pool, the builder said.
The house on Blue Ribbon, being built by Milton, comprises a transitional design between traditional and contemporary. Many of the rooms feature tray ceilings, each one different from the other. The ceiling in the formal living room is simple and elegant with a double decorative border. There is a coffered ceiling in the formal dining room. The tray ceiling in the family room has exposed beams, and the master bedroom features a deep tray ceiling.
On the first floor, there is an area between the mudroom and entrance foyer that features a built-in desk, ideal for day-to-day management of the home and the kitchen.
The second floor has a similar, although much larger area which could be a homework or computer room. The master suite includes a sitting room, his-and-hers walk-in closets and a bath with a honed slate floor.
This house has a six-zone heating and air-conditioning system, an exercise room with a rubber floor on the basement level, central vacuuming, and several fireplaces, including a gas-fueled fireplace in the formal living room.
