WESTPORT — Staying mindful about the dangers of food allergies was at the heart of the Connecticut Food Allergy Heroes Walk at Sherwood Island State Park on Saturday afternoon.

“People don’t realize what it’s like to always wonder,” said State Rep. Gail Lavielle, whether prepared foods contain ingredients that could cause potential harm.

“Basically this is just a walk to raise awareness,” said Kristine Magnifico, senior manager of peer-to-peer fundraising with Food Allergy Research & Education, the national group behind the event.

Heroes were the theme for the one-mile walk, which drew close to 500 people from around the state, some in capes and costumes.
