A driver escaped serious injuries after crashing into the median on Interstate 95, between southbound Exits 16 and 17, Saturday morning.

Traffic on the highway, however, was tied up as State Police shut down two travel lanes around the accident scene during emergency operations.

The 2004 Nissan Altima smashed into the median about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and initial reports to Westport firefighters indicated the driver had been injured and that the vehicle had caught fire.

Firefighters arriving on the scene found steam rising from the vehicle's damaged front end, but no fire. The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was not seriously injured and declined to be taken to the hospital.

After applying absorbent to the road's surface because of fluids spilled by the crash, firefighters left the scene shortly after 10 a.m.
