The Congregation for Humanistic Judaism has planned a family Havdalah celebration at Compo Beach on Saturday evening, Aug. 18.

The celebration is planned for 6 p.m. to mark the end of the Sabbath. The event is open to the public, but registration is required, according to a news release.

The rain date is Sunday, Aug. 19.

Participants should bring their own picnic food, but dessert will be provided, the congregation said. It also recommended attendees bring beach chairs or blankets and flashlights.

At sundown a brief ceremony will feature the traditional wine, braided candle and spice box.

The celebration is an opportunity for prospective members to learn about the congregation in an informal setting and for existing members to socialize, according to the release.

Compo Beach is at 64 Compo Beach Road. Those without beach-parking permits may obtain temporary permits at the gate by telling attendants they are attending the Havdalah, the congregation said. From the gate, attendees should go straight, then turn right, follow the road and look for the congregation banner on the right.

To register to attend, call 203-226-5451.
