Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County is seeking hospice volunteers from Westport and Weston and has planned a five-session course to train them.
Volunteers visit terminally ill patients and their families and provide emotional support, respite care and companionship, the organization said.
The course begins Tuesday, Oct. 23, with a session from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Training will be at the Visiting Nurse offices in Suite 114 at the Health and Wellness Center of Norwalk Hospital at I-Park, 761 Main Avenue (Route 7) on the Norwalk /Wilton town line
Four more sessions are planned between then and Nov. 8.
The training is designed to help volunteers develop the skills necessary to work with patients and families, and volunteers are provided with ongoing support and supervision, the organization said.
"Hospice volunteers play a vital role in supporting our hospice patients and their families and are an integral part of the hospice-care team," Chris Urpin, Visiting Nurse's volunteer coordinator said in a news release. "The team works together to help patients live their last days in comfort with peace, dignity and grace."
