Hole in the Wall Gang recruiter at Sunrise Rotary

A recruiter for the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp will address the Westport Sunrise Rotary at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Bertucci's Restaurant, 833 Post Road East.

Michael Hund's topic will be, "The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp: Carrying the Torch Left by Paul Newman."

Hund, who began working with the camp in 2003, would drive from his home state of Kansas to Connecticut every summer to volunteer as a counselor. He was asked in 2008 to join the camp full-time as the camper recruiter, working with hospitals from Boston to Washington, D.C., and internationally, to promote the camp and coordinate the safe arrival of children and families.

Founded in 1988 by the late actor Paul Newman, who had lived in Westport. the camp is a nonprofit, year-round center serving children and their families coping with cancer, sickle cell anemia and other serious illnesses. Through summer sessions and family weekend programs at the camp in Ashford and year-round outreach to hospitals and clinics throughout the Northeast, the camp will serve free more than 17,500 children in 2011.

The public is welcome at the Rotary meeting as guests with a $12 fee per person which includes a breakfast buffet.
