President Obama will swoop into Westport for a little while this evening to collect big cash for his campaign war chest.

The fundraiser at the waterfront estate of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein is expected to be a blockbuster with about 75 attendees anteing up $35,800 a head for the Obama re-election effort. The 7 p.m. reception, with a few marquee names in attendance, follows a more egalitarian fundraiser where tickets are $500 each at the Stamford Marriott.

Westport is familiar with the fundraising routine of major political candidates -- Bill Clinton mined the local landscape for campaign cash no fewer than three times in the 1990s, and his wife, Hillary, was hosted by Weinstein for a fundraiser when she was exploring her first run for the U.S. Senate in New York.

So what do people think about Westport being in the national political spotlight, albeit very briefly, and how deserving the guest of honor is of the nearly $2.7 million the event stands to rake in?

Here's a random sampling conducted downtown by the Westport News last week:
