Westport's Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County is offering a bereavement support group in February for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community who have lost life partners.

The group will meet at the Triangle Community Center, 16 River St., Norwalk, on four successive Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Feb. 8 through Feb. 29.

"Given the non-traditional nature of a same-sex relationship, the bereavement needs of the LGBT community are unique when it comes to the experience of losing a loved one," said Kristin Carpenter, a grief and bereavement counselor the agency. "This support group will address the needs of those who may feel disenfranchised in their grief. These are people who may have been kept away from their partner at the end of life."

Visiting Nurse said participants would have an opportunity to share their feelings in a safe environment and gain a deeper understanding of their experience of loss and begin the process of healing.

The program is free, but pre-registration is required.
